Synopsis: A sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. That’s where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous hugging spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago – all while she navigates her many tangled relationships.
Wednesday Season 1 Overview
Unless you have been living under a rock or on a mountain with no internet access, you have probably heard or seen the newly released Tim Burton’s spin-off of the classic Addams family, Wednesday. The series has gone viral across various social media platforms since its release – and it deserves all the hype.
The Netflix series premiered a few weeks ago and it is arguably one of the biggest shows of the year. The series follows Wednesday Addams, played by the young and talented Jenna Ortega, as she enrolls in Nevermore Academy. Nevermore High is not your typical school though. It’s a school for the outcasts who have different supernatural powers. Each group forms their own clique and whether it be werewolves, vampires, sirens or psychics, Nevermore has it all.
Wednesday is not your typical teenager as well, she is the daughter of Morticia and Gomez so that comes as a given! She is a loner, she loves black and is not afraid to make blood spill if anyone crosses her path. She has come back for days and is not one to accept defeat.
Wednesday is not initially excited about transferring schools but Nevermore isn’t as gloomy as she expected. A murder mystery in the school keeps her busy as she tries to stop the monster from devouring the school students and locals.
Part of the reason the show has become a cultural icon is the great casting. From Jenny Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán and Christina Ricci (who played a young Wednesday Addams in the Addams Family Values in 1993) The cast do a great job bringing these characters to life. Jenny Ortega masters the deadpan look, and the snarky rebuttals help her fully embody Wednesday in a way only she could master.
Secondly, the fashion in the show doesn’t disappoint. The goth-chic layered with some soft punk and statement pieces sent fans into a frenzy. It adds to and enriches the story, giving it believability and relatability, as most of the show’s target audience would die for this kind of style.
They are already numerous videos on TikTok of content creators and influencers trying to recreate Wednesday’s dress to the “Rave’N” dance party in episode four. Each character has their own effortlessly chic style and viewers can easily identify their style in the different characters This just adds to the excitement of the series.
There is no doubt that Tim Burton is a genius when it comes to directing. He lends his gothic style and affluence in horror storytelling to give this show a certain je ne sais quois that only he could. The cinematography, set design and storytelling in this show are fantastic.
Although this is a dark and twisted thriller, Wednesday also somehow manages to be a comedy too. It’s perfectly balanced and brilliantly executed, making it a must-watch series. It will undoubtedly be among the best shows of the year.
